Since BIGBANG’s 2015 World Tour [MADE] in Manila had taken place in Mall of Asia Arena last July 30, 2015, my post concert syndrome is still too strong that I cannot imagine myself moving on just yet. I am missing the boys a lot and I am wishing I have enough funds so I can watch their concert again and again even if it means I have to travel to another country. But reality is such a big mockery, because I know it will not happen unless I won the lottery (haha what a rhyme!).
BIGBANG is a South Korean pop group by YG Entertainment consisting of Kwon Ji-yong (GD or G-Dragon), Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P), Dong Young-bae (Taeyang), Kang Daesung (Daesung) and Lee Seung-hyun (Seungri). They debuted in 2006 and has been well known worldwide. They successfully ended their first world tour, Big Bang Alive Galaxy Tour 2012, and had been busy with their solo activities since then. They have been sorely missed as a group so the fans have been delighted when they announced their comeback!
The anticipation since the announcement that Manila is included in their world tour until the concert day itself had been full of restless excitement for me and perhaps the other VIPs (BIGBANG fans) can relate to that because we have been waiting for their comeback for three years! It grew more intense when they released the teaser for their MADE series album which consists of special singles “M” “A” “D” “E” which have been topping the charts continuously and have been well received, amounting to more than a million views on YouTube in less than a day!
Before the concert started, music videos from “M” “A” “D” and previous albums were shown. The fans were squealing with excitement just by watching these videos.
The excitement built up when the LED screen started showing each members name. As the flicker of lights went on and off after each member’s name was shown, their silhouettes became visible through the LED screen which made the crowd grew louder! I can hear myself screaming as the LED screen opened in the middle and each member clad in silver and black appeared in front of us. Then I heard Taeyang said, “Manila make some noise!” Then Seungri followed it up with, “Philippines SCREAM!” .
They started with Bang Bang Bang from their single album “A”. We chanted, sang, screamed and jumped with them! It was the best way to start the concert! It was immediately followed by Tonight wherein during the interlude G-Dragon had a laser gun which he pointed towards the audience garnering more scream!
When it is BIGBANG, expect massively energetic performance, live band music (yes they have their own LIVE band during the concert!) and awesome stage set-up unlike any other which consisted of a main stage, a second stage and a moving stage ramp. At first, I thought the moving stage ramp on each side which connects the main stage to the second stage is just a moving walkway. During Stupid Liar, the stage ramp slowly moved towards the center and joined together over a sea of overly excited fans at the VIP Dance Area. It was unexpected and it was my first time to see something like this! They also had the revolving stage with mirrors when they sang Loser and for Bae Bae they had the large statue of an angel which was also featured in their music video. Good thing I did not watch any videos from their previous MADE concert tours, or else it would have spoiled what was supposed to be a memorable experience which they have prepared for us.
There were several fan missions during the concert which we have accomplished. The first mission is to sing the chorus of Haru Haru with BIGBANG, second mission is to make a blue ocean by using a blue wallpaper on our phone screen when they sing Blue, and the third mission is to make a white ocean by turning on our phones’ flashlights when they sing If You.
Unlike their other songs from their MADE series album, If You does not have a music video. They want the listeners to focus more on the song and its lyrics because according to them ever since they debuted, this is their saddest song ever. You can feel just by listening to this song how much sorrow and pain one has to go through during a breakup.
Most of their songs from their MADE series album are great, catchy and vibrant. However, Loser remained my favorite among them. I even made a separate article about it days after it was released because I have become emotionally involved in this song (read more about Loser here).
This song conveys what most of us had been through or might be going through: Failures and struggles. It acknowledges one’s fault, shortcomings, and disappointments. It exposes one’s vulnerability.
They also sang Bad Boy which won my heart when I first heard it during their ALIVE World Tour in Manila in 2012, which is my first K-Pop concert. I am not yet a K-Pop fan back then and I only knew Fantastic Baby. I do not even have any idea who the members were! I did not even have the concert ticket and was about to give up watching until Ms. Happee released 10 additional tickets right before the concert started. It was on October 24, 2012 that I became a VIP and a GD bias and yes, BIGBANG is my first K-Pop love! Thank you Ms. Happee, you and BIGBANG changed my life in a more exciting way!
BIGBANG members also performed their songs from their solo albums and collaborations.
Seungri performed Strong Baby. He also sang Let’s Talk About Love which also featured G-Dragon and Taeyang. I love the funky beat of this song! What made us scream out of delight was Seungri and GD’s bromance haha! Seungri said to GD, “GD pogi pogi” (“pogi” is a Filipino word for “good looking”) and during their performance, he even playfully said to GD on a higher note than usual, “GD oppa!” Haha Seungri, you are such a charmer!
Daesung sang Wings which featured his powerful voice and while dancing on the second stage, he playfully shook his butt towards the fans, cute Daesung!
The lights turned low then green LED lights illuminated the whole place as T.O.P emerged from the stage and sang Doom Dada. This song featured his suave deep voice and rapping skills and it felt like I was in trance while he was performing.
Taeyang performed Eyes, Nose, Lips. I also LOVE this song to the core, especially the English version with Tablo which I also wrote an article here. This song was awarded as Song of the Year while Taeyang won Best Vocal Performance for this song as well as Best Male Artist and Artist of the Year in MAMA 2014 (MNET Asian Music Awards). This song features his soulful voice, it was beautifully heartbreaking.
GDYB is another subunit of BIGBANG (G-Dragon & Youngbae). G-Dragon and Taeyang performed Good Boy which was followed by another favorite of mine, Crooked (삐딱하게) by G-Dragon from his second album Coup d’Etat.
They also sang two more songs from their latest album, Sober and Bae Bae. Then G-Dragon thanked the fans and discussed their MADE series album. During that time, the songs Zutter (쩔어) and Let’s Not Fall in Love (우리 사랑하지 말아요) from MADE Series “E” were not yet released but the fans begged him to do a sample which he initially turned down and fortunately he then gave in and rapped a part of Zutter (쩔어) while Seungri did beatboxing.
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” ‒ Nelson Mandela
They are definitely busy people, no doubt about that. They speak English so well so they communicated with us so easily since most Filipinos speak and understand English but what moved us and kept us shouting with delight is their effort to speak the Filipino language.
During the introduction, Daesung and Taeyang said, “Mabuhay” (which means “long live” it is also used as a way of greeting in Filipino).
You can’t help but get smitten by Seungri when he said these flowery words, “I love Philippine food, I love Philippine ladies!” You will surely adore Daesung when he asked the crowd, “Nakikita nyo ba ako?” (Can you see me?) and then he apologized with an exaggerated sad face that because of his hairstyle which covers his eyes, he cannot see us, so funny! T.O.P. thanked the fans and said they really want to sing their songs for us then he asked the crowd, “Gusto nyo ba?” (Do you like it?) which he repeated thrice prompting us to scream even louder each time!
Another attack of Seungri’s charm who is also well versed in real estate industry because of his mother is when he said with conviction, “I want to stay here! I want to live with you guys! I want to buy a Manila house!” The crowd cheered on him which made him volunteer that he can do “pabebe” (in Filipino, it means to act cutely) and an explosion of cuteness emanated from Seungri when he did giyomi haha! So cute maknae!
Time flew so fast and it was almost the end of the concert, they also sang Fantastic Baby, We Like 2 Party, Hands Up and Bang Bang Bang during the encore. Seungri also gave special mention to 2NE1 member and fellow label mate, Sandara Park, who watched their concert while she is on a tour in Manila. After which, they introduced their band members and dancers.
How I felt during the concert was amazing, they did really great and I can tell we all enjoyed the show. It was just that I was fangirling alone so I thought it would have been more enjoyable if I have my friends with me (but they were mostly in the VIP area ㅠ.ㅠ) so hopefully when BIGBANG comes back, I will be in the VIP area too so I can enjoy more and immerse myself into their music.
This was supposed to be an internal joke by the fans that got out of hand and made worse by misleading headlines created by the media which in turn made Filipino VIPs look bad for having this type of humor. Filipino VIPs love BIGBANG so much that we care to know how the boys feel performing in Manila and being with their Filipino fans. We do not want to create any misunderstanding between other international VIPs because we know how we all feel for the boys. We are truly grateful that BIGBANG went to Manila and we hope they will come back again. They changed my life three years ago, and they will definitely stay in the depths of my fangirl heart until the end. I LOVE BIGBANG, you guys are awesome!
Thank you BIGBANG for coming to Manila! We miss you and we are glad you came here, please keep making great music! Thank you Ms. Happee Sy, Mr. Vernon Go, PULP Live World, Live Nation and YG Entertainment for bringing BIGBANG to Manila, you made a lot of people happy, more K-Pop concerts please! ^_^
